Lesson 3

連れて行ってくれることになった。 (It came about that he was to [he would] take me along.)
1. 来月からニューヨークで働くことになりました。 (I am to work in New York starting next month.)
2. この車は今のうちになおしておかないと大変なことになる。(If you don’t repair this car now you will face a great deal of trouble later.)
- Cf. 行くことにした。 (I / you / he / decided to go )
1. 雨が降り始めたから行かないことにしました。 (It started to rain so I decided not to go.)
2. 電車で行くことにしたら駅まで連れて行って上げますよ。(If you decide to go by train I will take you to the station.)
コロンボの車みたいだ (It looks like Columbo’s car.)
- V / adj / N みたいだ (looks like V / adj / N). みたい is more informal than のよう or よう. It can substitute for either.
  1. 晴れるみたいだからかさを持って行かなくてもいいだろう。(It looks like it is going to clear up so we don’t have to take an umbrella with us.)
  2. 太郎ちゃんが持っているみたいなカメラがほしい! (I want to have a camera like the one Taro has!)
  3. この魚はちょっと古いみたいですよ。 (This fish looks a little old.)
  4. 山田さんみたいにつりの上手な人とつりに行ってみたい。(I want to try going fishing with someone who is a skilled fisherman like Mr. Yamada.)
新しい車が買えないだけです。 (It is just that he can’t buy a new car.)
これだけです。 (It is only this. This is all there is.)
- V (or V+ない) だけだ。 (It is just that V)
  1. 行きたいけれど時間がないだけです。 (I want to go but it is just that I don’t have time.)
  2. 食べちゃいけません。見るだけです。 (You can’t eat it. It is only to look at.)
  3. 暗くなるのを待つだけだった。 (The only thing (we could do) was to wait for it to get dark. )
けいざいのために(は) (for the sake of the economy / for the benefit of the economy)
- Nの／Vために（は）(for N /V). When a verb precede s ために（は）it is often exchangeable with のに or に (for in order to to)
  1. 子供のためだけに働いているみたいです。 (It feels like I’m working only for the sake of my children.)
  2. 田村先生は私のためにその本を図書館（としょかん）から借りて来て下さいました。(Prof. Tamura went to the library and borrowed that book for my sake.)
  3. アメリカへ行くためにはビザはいりませんか。 (Don’t you need a visa to go to America?)
  4. 山田さんに会うためには(会うのには)どうしたらいいでしょうか。(What should I do to meet Mr. Yamada?)
  5. 気持のいい生活をするために（するのには）もっとお金がいります。(I need more money in order to have a pleasant life.)
  6. 父のしごとを手伝うために（手伝いに）いなかへ帰った。(He returned to the country in order to help with his father’s work.)
- N.B.: ためorためにwithout は to follow it often means “because of / because /on account of”
  1. 雨のためピクニッックはだめになった。 (Because of the rain the picnic was cancelled.)
  2. その本は高いためだれも買えない。(No one can afford that book.)
  3. ここの気こうになれないためによく病気になる。 (I get sick often on account of the fact that I haven’t gotten used to the climate here.)
  4. てい電のためにテレビが見られなかった。 (We couldn’t watch television because of the power outage.)
魚がつれない上に (in addition to not being able to catch fish)
- X （の）上に (on top of : in addition to)
  1. 頭がいい上に金持ちでハンサムです。 (In addition to being bright he is rich and handsome.)
  2. あの人の手紙の字は下手な上にまちがっている字が多い。(On top of his writing of Chinese characters in his letter being poor /In addition to the poor quality of the handwriting in his letter there are many wrong characters.)
あそこにお世話になる (be in the care of that place)
1. 学生の時山田先生にいろいろお世話になりました。(Professor Yamada looked after me well when I was a student.)
2. 山田先生のお世話であの会社に入りました。(I got into that company through Professor Yamada’s good offices.)
  - C.f. 世話をする (look after)
    子供がいぬの世話をするはずでしたがやはり私が世話をすることになってしまいました。(My child was supposed to take care of the dog but I have ended up doing it just as I feared.)
ごちそうになろうかと思う（I wonder if I could be treated to a meal .）
- かと思う (the か which precedes 思う makes the feeling or thinking more uncertain)
  1. パーティーに行こうかと思いましたがやっぱり行かない事にしました。(I considered going to the party but I decided not to after all.)
  2. 山田さんにそのことを言おうかと思いましたが言いませんでした。言わなくてよかった。(I wondered if I should tell Mr. Yamada about it but I didn’t. I am glad that I didn’t.)
  3. 山田さんに私の家へ来てもらおうかと思いましたが、やっぱり私が山田さんの家へ行くことにしました。 (I was wondering if I should have Ms. Yamada over to my house but I decided after all that I would go to her house.)
